Unit 5.2A Assignment

On the class wiki site, post your favorite new Web 2.0 tool that has not been covered in detail in this class that you have discovered in this course or elsewhere. List the URL, what the tool is, and why you find it useful using the wiki template page. No duplication allowed-each page must be an original new tool. This can be done after reviewing the Unit 9 material, which covers more Web 2.0 resources.

Description of Site:

TikaTok (Pearson) is an advertisement free digital publishing tool, offering Common Core aligned project templates that allow students to write, illustrate, and publish projects as professional quality hardcover, softcover, and digital books. TikaTok allows students the opportunity to participate in structured writing assignments. Students can also upload their drawings or photographs to truly personalize their work. TikaTok requires a paid subscription. There are three different subscriptions, in which user can choose from. The first is the basic subscription, which cost $19 for one year. This subscription includes access to all project templates and an unlimited amount of student accounts. The second subscription is the Digital Plus subscription, which is $99 for one year. Users have access to all project templates, unlimited amount of student accounts, an unlimited amount of digital book downloads, and discounts offered for printed book options. The last subscription is the Premium Subscription, which is $399 for one year. This subscription includes all of the features of the Digital Plus subscription. Additionally, subscribers benefit from receiving 25 hardcover or softcover custom books. Student enrollment is managed via the classroom teacher. Teachers simply choose the grade, name the class section, and create usernames and passwords for students. Students then visit TikaTok and begin their book publishing journey. TikaTok is collaborative in its nature. TikaTok has a training site loaded with free resources such as lesson plans, quick tips, and video tutorials to support users. Although these resources are available to all users, collaborative sharing of books (already created) is restricted to only the author (student), teacher of author, and parent(s) of author. An effective and useful feature of TikaTok is that when a teacher is viewing student publications, comments or suggestions can be made through annotations. Lesson plans suggestions are also present. TikaTok is designed for the K-6 classroom and provides opportunities for authentic assessment of student understanding.

Educational Uses of Site

A lesson plan tab is present on the TikaTok homepage. By clicking the lick, educators can view lesson plan ideas from other TikaTok users. Templates are created for students to follow as they begin their drafts of their first works. Students could be given a narrative writing prompt that eventually is turned into a plot driven book. Students could also write books sensitive to the time of year. Students could write nonfiction books about important figures during Black History Month. Older students could participate in a collaborative reading program where they read to younger students the stories they have created and vice versa.

Review of Site

TikaTok is a comprehensive publishing tool that encompasses what it means to take writing and make it come alive. The site is user friendly for both teachers and students. The free lesson plans are a great tool for emerging users.
